In addition to prayer and fasting, the Bishops are calling on each of us to contact our elected officials on Capitol Hill with timely and important Roe Facts over the 9 weeks of the Novena.
Please contact your Member of Congress and two Senators with this week's Roe Fact.
Additional Novena prayer and education materials are accessible at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/take-action-now/call-to-prayer/legal-protection-of-human-life.cfm.
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement has thrust Roe v. Wade into the news with a disturbing amount of misinformation about the decision.  I write to correct some misperceptions.
For example, many people don't realize that Roe v. Wade legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Roe says abortions may not be restricted at all during the first trimester (3 months) and in the second trimester may be regulated only for the mother's health. After "viability" Roe allows abortion to be prohibited but must make an exception for the woman's life or health.
But in Roe's companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court defined "health" to include "all factors-physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age-relevant to the well-being" of the mother. In most states, that is broad enough to permit virtually any abortion in the seventh, eighth, or ninth months of pregnancy  if any of these reasons is invoked.
I urge you to check out other facts about the extreme abortion policy that Roe forced on our nation.  You can see these facts at www.usccb.org/roe.
